I would like to start by thanking 2 members of the executive that stepped down this past year:
Linda Pellegrini who served as president for over 20 years and now has retired
Tina Tremelling Recording Secretary has moved on to concentrate on her new work position after 11 years.
Huge welcome to Cheryl Brodie-Campbell – president, Thoa Tran – chief steward, Kristy Haggett recording secretary and Duane Andrewes – steward
This past year has been extremely challenging in dealing with the employer and getting them to abide by the language of the collective agreement and not their sole interpretation of it. Local 57 has hired Kailun Chen, Goldblatt Partners to support in the fight back against our employer.
We have faced eliminations – 4 hour evening ward clerk shift on surgery, RPT ward clerk position, FT materials Management position and the reassignment of RPNs from Step Down Unit to Surgery.
GGH has moved to Central Materials Management of the hospital supplies at the Oakville plant and opened a satellite DI Clinic in partnership with Conestoga College. With this addition our DI clerks are to be the first responders to medical situations, the hospital has required them to be trained in CPR, Defibrillator and first aid for the clinic. This is not a requirement for the hospital location and still has not been added to the job description. The local is challenging all of this on behalf of the members.
The local has filed 33 grievances this year compared to 36 in 2025.
Referrals to arbitration 1- 2022, 7 – 2025, 9 – 2026.
In total we have resolved 17, 39 waiting for Step 2 meetings.
include in the numbers above referred to arbitration – 3 executive members were each issued 3 day suspensions for instructing DI clerks not to attend training pending conversation with union and HR, interference with local affairs, evening shift premiums, job postings (not including shift time, deny member based on experience but award to less senior with little experience or post and grant to external applicant), vacation entitlement – not using anniversary date/continuous hours level to calculate and give to members (still do vacation dump for all in April)
On April 13 we participated in a Section 49 arbitration relating to Article 12.03 A There is a second date on June 18.
As the new president I am extremely proud of all the hard work our Local Executive has done to enforce the Collective agreement and educate members. I work full time 12 hour shifts as a PSW and could not do the work of the local without all of you. In closing I would also like to thank Jason our National Rep, Treena Area 1 VP and Kevin OCHU first VP for the ongoing support they have provided to our struggling local.
In Solidarity,
Cheryl Brodie-Campbell
President
CUPE Local 57
JHS Committee
